England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward qualification for a tournament taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an Three Lions match since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Rally

The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in a London landmark on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were confronted as they arrived the location by approximately 50 activists, who urged Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.

Banners were raised with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Timeline

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will feature Wales if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to households and help connect with a wider spectrum of viewers.

Qualifying Teams

The Irish team are set to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that miss out on the tournament through that route.

Locations and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
