The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
