Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.
Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.
A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".
The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Previous Developments
The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.
Certain accounts indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Nevertheless, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.
Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the existing front lines.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.
Negotiating Stances
The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of maximalist demands that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.
Zelensky commented discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.
He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.
Strategic Factors
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently came ahead of speculation that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
