NY Launches Online Platform for Residents to Report Immigration Videos After Arrests of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a recent reporting form asking citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This step comes just a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.
American Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen has the right to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to provide that footage with us. We are pledged to examining these submissions and determining any violations of law."
Form Details
The form includes options to send images and video footage of the operation, plus a field to specify geographic details. Prior to sending, users must tick a box that states that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which observers say included more than 50 federal agents, occurred in a famous district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available widely – frequently to sightseers.
Videos of the operation depict multiple masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the urban roads.
Official Reactions
In a midweek briefing featuring the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He said the individuals were released on the following day with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This is a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a justification to generate turmoil for the government to utilize the military to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the federal action escalated – each of the political contenders condemned the raid, along with NY's governor.
"Once again, the current administration selects authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It has to end," a contender wrote.
The city's immigrant rights groups expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and communities," said the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has said it refrains from apprehend citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the existing leadership.
