NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm this decision immediately after his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will forever remain inside me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he hails from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
