Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The video footage, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message seemed to provoke a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats released a joint declaration condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and recant his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Officials' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this country and made an oath to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's calls for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
